comment Mail not getting to users on Google when MX records specified in Amazon Route 53
Give us the domain name. It's usually something obvious when we have that. That, or the missing emails are just in their spam boxes.

comment Disk Partitioning on AWS EC2
@Erico If you're making 40 servers, get a configuration management system to handle this for you. Take a look at things like Ansible.

I'd go with the new volume approach, personally.

comment Do I need Bind for my dedicated server?
You'd likely be better off having a third-party host your DNS, like Amazon's Route53 offering.

comment PHP install on clean Amazon Linux AMI
You're really better off using Composer to manage the PHP Amazon SDK anyways. I wouldn't leave it up to Yum.

@user1031742 SPF doesn't get installed on the server, it's a DNS thing.

comment How to manually drain ELB connections for a EC2 instance?
Manually removing it via the ELB console counts as deregistering per the docs. You may want to contact support if it isn't working right.

comment Reset ownership
You're probably best off restoring from backup. SSH isn't the only thing likely to be affected by this, and getting it back to normal is probably nearly impossible.

comment What is a recommended way to patch the Shellshock Bash bug on an unsupported Ubuntu server?
The idea of fixing a bash vulnerability by using a website URL piped into bash is kinda scary (even if they do appear to be legit).

If you try telnet your-url.cache.amazonaws.com 11211 and execute some commands is it similarly slow?

How much slower are we talking about here? Have you properly benchmarked or is this just a feeling?

comment Is it safe to create an AWS EC2 snapshot of a volume that is attached to a running instance?
@RTF Correct. The only problems you'd encounter with what you did are the same sorts of ones you'd have if someone kicked the power cord out of the server causing an unexpected reboot.

I'd check your routing tables.

1. Yes, if you did it correctly. 2. No, inbound rules would not affect that.
