comment How do you setup a DNS server in order to be able to add records on-the-fly?
Could you please elaborate on the nsupdate script? For example, why the record=yyy.example.com? And why are you deleting an A record? Basically I want my subdomains to be pointed to external nameservers (provided by my customers, whom manage their own hosting). How would I do this? Add NS records instead of A records?

comment How many mongod instances should I run with a 2 server replicaset setup?
Thank you, that makes sense.

I've checked the new documentation. While they are excellent, I cannot seem to find the statement that says that running 3 mongo daemons on 2 servers is ineffective. I know it says that you should have 3 servers, but a mongo server is simply a running process. Therefore you could have 3 mongo servers on one physical machine?

So, for a replicaset to be effective, one has to have at least 3 physical servers? I wish the documentation would state this. Unfortunately I only have 2 servers at the moment and would like to stick with that due to cost constraints.

What about my suggestion? Each server having 2 normal mongo instances and 1 arbiter? I don't see why having two servers would be such an issue.

comment How should I use sudo from an upstart script?
I don't see why the ugly su exec is better than a single sudo. Also, with both commands, any output redirection does not seem to be written by the unprivileged user but by root.

Excellent, thanks a lot. Did you really learn all this from man sudoers? I found it to be quite difficult to parse.

The error is a result of this user not having admin rights.

@DerekPressnall, thanks, but when I run /sbin/stop webapp I get stop: Unable to connect to system bus: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory. How would I allow mainuser to only execute this command?
