comment MariaDB, Galera, xtrabackup - do I need the binary log?
No, it does not need it to make backups, you will need it only when restoring to a point in time. More info: percona.com/doc/percona-xtrabackup/2.1/xtrabackup_bin/…

The error is everything but obvious, see for instance: docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora_Draft_Documentation/0.1/…

comment Monitoring with Zabbix: Reducing granularity?
Reduce the frequency at which items are being gathered, the defaults are quite resource-hungry. Use mostly active items instead of passive, it's better for the load distribution as well. Alternatively, with that few servers, you might want to look at hosted monitoring. tribily.com is hosted zabbix, which might be saving you a lot of hassle. Disclaimer: I'm the founder of tribily ;)

comment Free centralized system monitoring for Ubuntu
Puppet has a bit of a learning curve, but it's well worth your effort. We have all our servers configured exclusively through puppet and it's pretty much the best thing that happened to us, like ever :)

Another place to check in this case is the "notifications" tab under admin in the frontend.

comment Store office passwords safely
If you combine it with a service like dropbox (getdropbox.com), it becomes a really nice and powerful solution. You add/update a password on one computer, it gets synched over to all other computers by the dropbox software. You'd have to check how that works with multiuser though, I use it for singleuser, multicomputer use.

comment There is any monitoring hosted solution?
This has changed a bit: We just started a company called Tribily (tribily.com) offering hosted zabbix. There are also some companies offering hosted Nagios, usually buried under a neat little skin.

comment What open source server monitoring for Linux server?
There is a big difference between software like zabbix and services like bijk.com though. Bijk.com and the likes do not offer full monitoring. They only offer the option to notify you when outages occur. A good solution will monitor all parameters of yoru server for you, so that it can alert you when problems are forming, before they become emergencies. An example: you want your monitoring to alert you when your Hard Disk is reaching 80% of it's capcity, so you can put effort into cleanign up your HD before the server fails. Bijk.com will only alert you when your server stops responding :)
