Yes, agreed. Hopefully the system is unit and integration tested and the cost of verifying SQL isn't that high. The admin is already there; that of SQL Server - they shouldn't be afraid of learning new skills. But the server would be free postgresql.org/docs/8.3/static/high-availability.html and so would its HA-stuff. And one wouldn't have to fight AD - a really big and bloated piece of software . Plus; it doesn't work very well across datacenters.

Normally you only create clusters for master-/write- services and let load balancing do reads, possibly with sticky connections. Your answer is good, but cfree might consider having a load balancer like HAProxy in front of two boxes running the web instead; one of the wwws go down, and HAProxy will notice this. Other than that, +1 for the answer.
