comment Index rebuilding on mirrored database sql server 2008
@mrdenny. needless to say what "buy more hard drives" means for some managers. In emergency situation this can be done without affecting database performance. The best approach though is to plan a good recovery model and taking regular backup logs. In mirroring you absolutely need log backups because databases have to be in Full recovery model -> The shrink will not be necessary and your business will be a lot safer.

Yes it normally should. Every change on data and log files are mirrored on databases from Mirror server. As a workaround, you could suspend the mirroring session between two databases, perform re-index and then resume it. msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175059.aspx

comment Is it possible as an Administrator to gain access to a SQL Server 2008 instance without changing any passwords?
glad it worked! yep... it is a pain the UAC. It can be disabled though.

just a guess: run cmd.exe console as administrator (C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe --> right click --> run as administrator) Probably you are facing the UAC problem.
