comment IP address in wrong country
That's not true - Google ranks sites in the same country as you higher in some situations (notably businesses). So if you search using www.google.co.uk it then a site based in the UK with either a UK TLD or a UK IP will rank higher than a US one assuming other factors are the same. See this link which includes an official Google response confirming this: google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/…

comment Quickest way to transfer 55GB of images to new server
He did mention it was two CentOS boxes, so they'd have rsync and file compatible versions of tar. Tools like rsync were created to replace tools like cpio :). You can't "resume" with cpio, at least without knowing where exactly you want to start from and filter your find as appropriate. Which is an unnecessary time overhead. Having said that, useful information for 'old' UNIX boxes :)

comment How do I list all users with root?
That's a good one liner, but be aware of the limitations (I'm sure MadHatter is aware of this already) - it won't check groups and it won't check sudoers. It will only check, as he says, implicit root.

comment How to shape size of SQL server resorces (RAM, CPU, and others)
+1 for RAID 10. But you'll find that optimising queries can possibly have thousands of % improvement in application performance, whereas increasing hardware specs can improve only a fraction of that.

comment Can't get memcached / php memcache installed on CentOS 5.5
The config variables including port and memory limit are in /etc/memcached.conf or /etc/memcached/memcached.conf - I don't know how to configure PHP to use it though, not my area :)

Ok - so looks all good? "service memcached start" and "service apache2 restart" - and you should have it shown in phpinfo ?

So that shows just the PHP extension installed. I'd remove that with "yum remove php-mecl-memcache", and try install both packages again. "yum install memcached php-pecl-memcache". If it shows memcached not found then try "yum search memcached" and see if it appears in the search results.

Ok - so if you run "rpm -qa | grep memcache" what results do you get?

comment Running apache with user subdirectories
I just reread your question - this doesn't CREATE the directories, just configures Apache to use them. If you want to create the physical directories you need to either manually do it or script it. You'll need to create a public_html directory in each users home. But I think my original answer is what you wanted anyway!
