comment How far is “too far off” for ntpd? Can it get there by a sudden jump to heavy load? Can this be overridden?
Replace the clock? What kind of systems have replaceable clocks nowadays?

comment Why is 1 of my 24 CPUs Pegged at 100%?
I would be suspicious of the 100k interrupt delta. You should post a Process Explorer process list screenshot where we can see what it says for things like System, DPCs, Interrupts.

comment Why do tracert latencies not add up to ping latency?
@NickW: Cisco's traceroute uses UDP (or at least does by default), but I just a tracert on Windows 7 (most likely what the OP is using) and a network sniff shows only ICMP.

As EEAA notes, tracert uses ICMP, not UDP.

comment How Often Do Windows Servers Need to be Restarted?
@Zypher: Are you talking about the KB @jscott linked to? If so, that's a Win95 bug! No version of NT has ever had a bug relating to the uptime counter

I recently restarted a production server for the first time since 2007. It turns out it wasn't necessary. :(

comment DB auto failover in c# does not work when the principal server physically goes offline
Does this need the [C#] tag? It doesn't seem to be specific to C# in any way.

comment What do you do about staff and personal laptops?
Has anybody who is advocating #3 actually tried it? I've spent probably hundreds or thousands of hours working that way and I hate it. Even over a LAN it's not fun, and over a VPN it reminds me of when I was on dialup.

I see, it's just that Ed Fries's link was more direct: microsoft.com/downloads/en/…

Your first link goes to SQL Server Express, not Management Studio. I accidentally downloaded the Server and sent it over RDP before I realized it was the wrong one!

Ed: That link is for managing SQL Server 2005 Express. Does anybody know what it will do with a non-Express edition?
