comment Assign multiple Elastic IPs to EC2 instance
Of note: you might not necessarily need multiple network interfaces; if you still have room left in the existing network interface(s), you can just add new private IP address(es) in those, and then assign new Elastic IP addresses to those new private addresses. Then once the network interfaces are full, then you need to add new interfaces.

comment Can't mount XFS partition anymore
Thanks. It worked. Here's how I was able to edit my partition table non-destructively: Backup current partition table: sfdisk -d /dev/sdf > sdf-pt.txt Create a copy: cp sdf-pt.txt new-sdf-pt.txt I then edited the sdf3 line in new-sdf-pt.txt to start 63 sectors higher, and I changed the size to be 63 sectors smaller. Finally: sfdisk --no-reread -f /dev/sdf < new-sdf-pt.txt and reboot. Voilà! :)

comment How to connect to Amazon RDS MySQL instance while preventing MITM attack
I'd think that would mean the $RDS_host you specify is different from the Common Name that the RDS server certification uses. Maybe try to see the common name the server uses by using openssl s_client -connect $RDS_host:3306 2>/dev/null | grep CN. You could also add a couple of -v to your mysql command; maybe that would output more useful information when it fails.

comment PHP5 session file cleanup never finishes
If you ps auxwwf, do you see a lsof subprocess, with state D or DN, below the stuck find process? I had this on my Ubuntu server too, recently. The only way I could find to fix those was to restart the server.

comment How can I prevent silent corruption on a dying hard drive?
Not sure why everyone assumed I wanted to keep using that drive... My questions were about how to prevent silent corruption (in the future), not about how to fix that already dead drive. Anyway, I added more details to my question.
