comment KVM on Ubuntu: console connection displays nothing
Thanks, I'd found the same page and tried it. I've verified the /etc/init/ttyS0.conf file exists, but when I do "sudo start ttyS0" I get start: Unknown job: ttyS0 . I'll see if I can figure out why.

comment Turning physical linux server into several virtual servers
I've already started with KVM and have setup a virtual machine and have spent some time debugging it. I've also looked into Xen and am about to try Virtualbox. I'm trying to find out what experience the community here has had and what tools they've found most useful. There's no need to call anyone lazy - if you don't know the answer feel free not to answer.

comment Rack server cpu upgrade: how to find out what's compatible?
Thanks for the detailed and excellent responses Chris. Looks like the 285 upgrade might be worth it, it should double my cpu performance.

Ok, found docs on at least one of them: HP DL145 2x 2.6GHZ OPTERON 2GB MEM 80GB SATA .

comment Rack server cpu upgrade: how to find out what's compatible?
The problem is the servers are sitting in a colo and I don't know their make and model. I may be able to dig it up, but I was hoping something like lshw would reveal enough to figure out if an upgrade is possible/desirable. Is there info from lshw or another command that would be helpful?

comment Catching unresponsive / high load mysql, perhaps with monit?
I've been looking through the slow query low without finding anything I can link back to the high load. I don't know if it's there and I'm not seeing it or if the cause of the issue is not recorded in the slow query log. I'll try setting up an automated show full processlist dump in cases of load and see what pops up.

comment Active Directory for web authentication: scale to 1M users?
The ability to set and enforce policies (eg. password lockout) is attractive. The company is also familiar with AD and would like to make use of the in-house knowledge, experience, and security/monitoring tools. Having said that, we're not married to it - we're looking to see if it's an appropriate use.

comment Ubuntu: Prevent X from starting (turn desktop into server)
Looks like there's no Services option under Administration. There's a "Login Window" option that lets me set the "Default Session" to "Secure remote connection" or "Failsafe Terminal", are either of those what I'm looking for?
