Experimental nuclear and particle physicist. These days I'm teaching, but I've spent a lot of time on nucleon structure in fixed target electron scattering and neutrino oscillations using reactors and beam sources.

comment Where is the best place to buy fast CPU time?
This falls into one of those tricky gray areas in terms of on-/off-topicness. I've voted for migration to Server Fault simply because I think you'll find more experience there.

comment which database should I use?
These kinds of questions are inevitably either too broad (rendering them into simple popularity polls) or too localized because they ask us to answer only for the OP's use case. This particular instance is worse than usual because conditions 7 is unrelated to the database and conditions 5 & 6 suggest that the OP has asked us to solve the intermediate problem instead of telling us what the really issue is (i.e. John has already decided on half his technology stack). Too localized.

comment Skip over intermediate server via SSH
@Unreason: I know nothing of sshfs, but I see that it accepts -p for specifying the port, so I assume you can use it as the tunneled connection.

comment Security from C99shell.I
To emphasize what @symcbean says: once compromised it is very, very hard to be confident that you're secure again short of a clean re-install. Anytime you use an executable from the desk to "check" or "clean" or "fix" something on the system you take the risk that the program/library you use is borged and does something other than or in addition to what you ask for.

comment How many cores should I configure in a VMware 2.x VM for Win7 32-bit guest?
That would depend on what you plan to do 1) with the VM and 2) natively on the host at the same time, now wouldn't it?

comment How to lock user in a shell script program?
While you discuss wanting to write a script you question is one of configuration. The choice of login shells, establishing chroot jails and so one. As such I'd go with Server Fault, though Super User runs a close second.

You can't find lex because the most common implementation is called flex (and predates the adobe product by roughly two decades).
