The problem with this strategy is that you can't seek in the whole file anymore from within less (searching for specific messages etc)

Thanks for the edit, I didn't know about KAME. ipsec-tools.sourceforge.net seems to be a good starting place, and that led me to: lartc.org/howto/lartc.ipsec.html

I find configuring IPSEC in Linux to be painfully awful because the documentation for OpenSWAN and others is incomplete and possibly the worst I have tried to understand. Also trying to interoperate between Linux and any commercial IPSEC implementation is based on guesswork (Juniper Networks stuff is particularly annoying). I would be eternally grateful if you knew of any good documentation (free online or paid for dead-tree)
