comment How to get less to seek faster with large log files?
The problem with this strategy is that you can't seek in the whole file anymore from within less (searching for specific messages etc)

comment What options are there available for securing data transfer within a semi-private network?
Thanks for the edit, I didn't know about KAME. ipsec-tools.sourceforge.net seems to be a good starting place, and that led me to: lartc.org/howto/lartc.ipsec.html

comment What options are there available for securing data transfer within a semi-private network?
I find configuring IPSEC in Linux to be painfully awful because the documentation for OpenSWAN and others is incomplete and possibly the worst I have tried to understand. Also trying to interoperate between Linux and any commercial IPSEC implementation is based on guesswork (Juniper Networks stuff is particularly annoying). I would be eternally grateful if you knew of any good documentation (free online or paid for dead-tree)

comment MySQL database backup over network
Those are really good options. Depending on their network bandwidth it may be faster than mine.

comment How to VNC into an existing X session?
Have a look here: rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/srodzaj/1/search/x11vnc You might not have much luck though. Fedora 11 is too new. Try installing the Fedora 10 packages.

comment Can rsync do incremental backups if the initial full was done with robocopy?
Yes, it's exactly the same although I have heard of problems where the access times and file permissions cannot be copied accurately from a Linux filesystem to a Windows one. Going the other way should be fine.

comment How to copy a large number of files quickly between two servers
I looked it up. The scp protocol requires round-trip messages to confirm each file transfer, this is going to add to the latency per-file no matter how wide your bandwidth. I don't know how well rsync handles this. Ref: blogs.sun.com/janp/entry/how_the_scp_protocol_works

comment Unable to print man pages from man -command
See my edits above, I can't think of a way to count the pages from the command line.

comment How to copy a large number of files quickly between two servers
+1 The tar option is far more efficient for large numbers of small files as both scp and rsync will have many more round trips per file across the network.

comment inaccessible_boot_device after p2v Windows 2000 Pro SP4 to Workstation 6.5
Well it depends if you have changed the physical disk size or layout during the conversion. If that has not changed then I suspect it's corrupted your image in some way. Boot your VM with a rescue disk image and see what you can find.

comment Fullscreen apps on linux multi monitor setups
Let us know which distro/window manager you are using. It could be you just need to configure your WM to handle each xinerama screen separately instead of as a continuous canvas.

comment Fullscreen apps on linux multi monitor setups
I have used IceWM and Xmonad with this setup and they both maximise a window to the current physical screen, unless you resize it manually to use the full double screen.

comment Using unix 'mail' command from CGI - dangerous?
Good point. I would suggest you make every effort to sanitize the mail text just in case.

comment What's the most efficient way of taking backup snapshots of a mysql database over the internet?
Cool, I didn't know about --rsyncable. Also bzip2 with a small block size might be ok. As far as the "shift" in the file goes, rsync is built to handle that. Database replication would be nice but not possible in my environment. I will try --compress
