comment Why hasn't rsync caught on in the Windows world?
When rsync runs over ssh, it starts an rsync process on the other side. You do not need to configure a standalone rsyncd running on the remote, but you do need to have it installed.

comment Migration from kvm to xen
While it is possible, you would need to provide much more detail about your system and why you want to move it before someone could give you a meaningful answer.

This post on linuxquestions.org should explain the debian release process for you: linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/…

Yep that's the default entry when you have no network at all. The eth0 lines needed to be added.

comment Debian virtual instance gives “No space left on device” during upgrade from wheezy to jessie
Hi Vishal, my only concern was making the space available while the system was running, your solution will work fine too. Remember to accept the answer that worked best for you. :)

OK, working on a full answer for you.

comment Debian virtual instance gives “No space left on device” during upgrade from wheezy to jessie
Hi @Vishal, could you remove the output of fdisk -l from your answer and give us the output of vgdisplay 01a This will show me if you can create a new Logical volume, or have the space to expand the root volume.

Your root partition is out of space. Debian downloads all update packages to the /var filesystem which on your setup looks like it's in the root partition.

comment How to get less to seek faster with large log files?
The problem with this strategy is that you can't seek in the whole file anymore from within less (searching for specific messages etc)

comment What options are there available for securing data transfer within a semi-private network?
Thanks for the edit, I didn't know about KAME. ipsec-tools.sourceforge.net seems to be a good starting place, and that led me to: lartc.org/howto/lartc.ipsec.html

comment What options are there available for securing data transfer within a semi-private network?
I find configuring IPSEC in Linux to be painfully awful because the documentation for OpenSWAN and others is incomplete and possibly the worst I have tried to understand. Also trying to interoperate between Linux and any commercial IPSEC implementation is based on guesswork (Juniper Networks stuff is particularly annoying). I would be eternally grateful if you knew of any good documentation (free online or paid for dead-tree)

Those are really good options. Depending on their network bandwidth it may be faster than mine.

comment How to VNC into an existing X session?
Have a look here: rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/srodzaj/1/search/x11vnc You might not have much luck though. Fedora 11 is too new. Try installing the Fedora 10 packages.

comment Can rsync do incremental backups if the initial full was done with robocopy?
Yes, it's exactly the same although I have heard of problems where the access times and file permissions cannot be copied accurately from a Linux filesystem to a Windows one. Going the other way should be fine.

comment How to copy a large number of files quickly between two servers
I looked it up. The scp protocol requires round-trip messages to confirm each file transfer, this is going to add to the latency per-file no matter how wide your bandwidth. I don't know how well rsync handles this. Ref: blogs.sun.com/janp/entry/how_the_scp_protocol_works
