Thank for the reply. Does this tar all my files, then move the tarball, then untar them? If so I assume I will need the same amount (or close) of free filespace available on the first disk as the size of the files I'm copying - and also the same situation on the second disk (space for the tarball and the files being untarred)??

Hi Sciurus - sorry I didn't reply - I wasn't notified that you'd made a comment (spend more time on stackoverflow). I've edited my answer to include some more information that I should have incuded at the time

I already had an answer on this question and it was deleted. very unhelpful (not you)... Thanks for the suggestion - there is no simlink. If I try to create anything inside the '/home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/TV/folder1' I am getting an input/output error. I think something is wrong with the drive or file system... I've posted the results of df -h to my original question does anything look wrong with my filesystem?

comment Linux (NAS) Permissions problem (Permission Denied)
Hi slillibri, someone else asked this exact same question then deleted their answer which isn't too helpful... SELinux doesn't seem to be installed (/selinux folder and /etc/selinux are both empty). ls -Z is not a valid command on my system, and I can't do either 'attrs' or 'getfattr'. The file system (XFS) supports extended attributes but I don't think they are in use. Is there any other way I can check other than the methods I've described (that don't work on my system)

I've edited the question with more information - it's not mounted as nfs but as smb.
