I've been involved in the professional management of FreeBSD and Linux servers since 1998.

I have in-depth experience with Ubuntu, Perl, PostgreSQL, Apache, darcs and RAID.

More recently I've begun using Amazon's suite of web services including EC2, S3 and CloudFront. I now use and enjoy Nginx as well.

It sounds like you want to set up Nginx as a caching proxy in that case.

upstream defines /servers/ and ports to connect to, not URIs. All your backend servers should be set to respond to the same URI requests.

comment Redirecting subfolder to different root in NGINX gives redirect loop
Based on your description, it sounds like alias, not the root directive is what you want.

comment Redirecting subfolder to different root in NGINX gives redirect loop
try commenting out the whole location block and see if you still get the error. If you do, the problem is elsewhere. If you've narrowed down to this location block for certain. Try commenting out particular lines until the behavior changes.

revised Low traffic Nginx on AWS Ubuntu 11.10 EC2, returns 499 when tested by monit, why?
update title to reflect that's not so much crashing, as being detected as down by monit, which restarts it.

comment ssl 301 redirect for nginx and wordpress
Are you trying to redirect GET requests or POST requests? POST requests can't be redirected. Otherwise, why not use a standard Nginx redirect syntax?
