Performance went up marginally, but not enough, I will switch to a virtual linux box instead. Seems I was underestimating the overhead.

comment Unable to establish remote access to workplace pc windows 7
There is an option to use the vpn provided gateway (no idea what the exact english wording of the optinon is, i currently only have access to a german windows instalation). If you uncheck that option, your regular internet traffic will still be routed through your internet connection and not through the vpn. Depending on the size of the network you are vpn-ing into, you might not be able to reach part of that network. choose the lesser of those two evils :)

comment Windows 2008 Incoming Connection: Where/How is Server IPv4 address defined
why don't you ask your hosting provider these questions? I think they will be able to answer all of these questions. or did you set up the server yourself?

comment Can ping IP address and nslookup hostname but cannot ping hostname
@jao its broadcasting a request to resolve the name in the local subnet. i think its the Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : NETWORK.local thats preventing a dns lookup here. check your tcpip settings for the dns suffixes which should be empty

comment Moving the DHCP/DNS services from a Windows server (Active Directory) to a Linux machine
I am not 100 % sure on this, but I think a DHCP server has to be authorized in an AD environment for windows networking to function correctly, and I do not think you can do this with a Linux DHCP server.

comment Can ping IP address and nslookup hostname but cannot ping hostname
you could try to wireshark the ping and the nslookup, and compare the results. try to find the packets in which ping tries to resolve the hostname to an ip address (dns uses udp port 53)
