comment top output seems fine, yet server is overloaded
tried fiddling with iptables rules but still cant download from ubuntu repository IP address.I can however SSH into that server from here. So will try fetching some linux-tools package and drop it over there. Not likely to work out though :(

@MIfe will take some time to install that package. Machine is having problems with apt-get.

@MIfe HEre it is: root@XMPP:/opt/tigase# cat /proc/loadavg 2.57 2.49 3.10 5/1322 28667 root@XMPP:/opt/tigase# cat /proc/loadavg 2.41 2.46 3.08 3/1322 28674 . It appears these are realtime stats too just like top outputs. At the moment irrelevant as server is not overloaded any longer. Is there anything wrong with top first line of output ?

@JennyD Whenever there are DB issues this java server logs them thoroughly. Not the case in this test. Besides, DB server's machine is mostly relaxed (about 3.0 load maximum, 16 cores). Also, "show processlist" command does not hint towards any serious usage. About iostat, is that not a realtime tool ? The overload conditions are now long gone. So it would make more sense to inspect some I/O logs if there are any. Besides, not sure how to use / interpret iostat.

@MIfe I have failed to point out the underlaying machine is 16 core.

@JennyD Yes it talks to an even less loaded (according to top command) DB server through about 12 connections and toa virtually no-load dummy HTTP server across some 10k connections. disks ? Hmm, I have no business with them and swap looks fine. Where would I look for anomalies ?

comment mysql client can't read query result?
@EricPlaton - client library - if you are thinking about Connector/J then I have tried mulitple versions of it without any change in results. As for any other client side code that might be in some libraries, there is none that I did upgrades to. There are no meaningful libraries to this server, all the relevant stuff is contained in its own jars.

comment mysql client can't read query result?
@EricPlaton - Lots have changed, the server is not the same any longer. It was an tigase.org server at base. MySQL was benchmarked and had no issues. Other MySQL server which used to work just fine also presents the exactly same behaviour. They are 5.1.x both. 500s is a recurring timeframe too.

comment mysql client can't read query result?
@dsznajder - yes, XMPP server is OSS, and we are talking about my changes from past few months that have created this mess. I remember testing it an year back and 180k simultaneous connections were no peroblem.

comment mysql client can't read query result?
@AlexanderJanssen - the number of simultaneous MySQL connections is independent of simulateous users XMPP users connected. I have varied it from 1 to 5 to 10, with CPU usages of < 100% (as low as a few percentage points) out of 1600%. As detailed in the post, they are not slow queries. IO load - don't know, 0.x %
