comment git clone - fail instead of prompting for credentials
These are both related - trying to piece them together - serverfault.com/questions/61915/…, stackoverflow.com/questions/7772190/….

If a catch all "batch" mode could be used to disallow prompting for host keys too - this would be ideal.

comment git clone - fail instead of prompting for credentials
We have a multi-server Jenkins set up, which annoyingly sits waiting for a prompt until killed if it runs on a new server missing the ssh keys - a way to configure that it will simply fail with a message and non-zero exit code would be useful.

comment How do I tell Git for Windows where to find my private RSA key?
Worth noting - if you have spaces in your home (if you are using win XP/server 2003 you will), then you should prefix the path with a single quote. Bizarrely - if you end it with a quote that will be in the variable...

comment windows 2003 - why can't serial port be accessed remotely?
Add - upon installing it, the verifying it is broke step failed - the update having been backed out, and reinstalled is not reproducing the problem.

Okay - plan to investigate what changed (hatched by a cunning colleague) - verify it works, dump the registry, install the update & restart, verify it's broke, dump the reg again, diff the two and look for likely suspect configuration changes.

Found here - superuser.com/questions/171794/… - in 2003, go to windows update, click custom (when ready), untick the update, and tick "don't show this update again". Click review and install to apply the change.

I now need to find out how to prevent this being installed again - however, later and different updates may rebreak what ever thing was broken with this.

comment windows 2003 - why can't serial port be accessed remotely?
I've tried setting "GPE\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Client/Server data redirection\Do not allow COM port redirection" to disable (from not set) - actually - maybe I need to enable this - I don't want redirection. I think I am going to try removing all the recent updates and reboot one of the affected servers.

And none of them seem related or have any known issues relating to it.

I am currently reviewing the updates installed to see if any specify changes to serial or device policies.

comment Look up manufacturer based on Mac Address?
I thought of this because I have worked in an environment where we routinely had to alter mac address, and had to use various things to avoid/check for collisions (not good). I work in environments typically with embedded devices - either in development, or doing dev ops/integration. Sometimes a whole batch comes with 1 mac address.

comment Look up manufacturer based on Mac Address?
One question - how reliably do Mac addresses, which can commonly be reset in hardware, reflect this database?

I note that you need to either restart the machine, or restart the ssh service with launchctl.

comment How do I prevent accidental rm -rf /*?
And you should use a VM or spare box to practice recoveries - find out what didn't work and refine said plan. We are getting into a fortnightly reboot - because there have been power outtages in our building, and every time it has been painful. BY doing a few planned shutdowns of all the racks, we've cut it from a few days of running around to about 3 hours now - each time we learn which bits to automate/fix init.d scripts for etc.

Can you try the install again, then add the output of dmesg | tail to the question please? Lets see if anything pops up there...

Okay - how about 'sudo ls -ld /usr/bin'?

comment unable to install anything on ubuntu 9.10 with aptitude
Looking at the error log above - the command is complaining about permissions writing to /usr/bin/lsof.dpkg-new. How about doing an ls -l of that file to see if it exists, what permissions it has etc.

comment svn: Syncing main source code with committed source code
No - think of SVN as versioned, audited storage. Regardless of the code you put in it, the SVN repo is the master store. You checkout and update from the repo, and commit your changes back into it. Have you used any SCM system before?
