Hi, I think you found the problem. Thanks! I didn't know tiff2pdf existed. It works, very fast, but there is a problem: output is 26 MB big, compared to 356K with tiff2ps/ps2pdf13.

@ewwhite: I can send you the file, which was created using Photoshop CS5. It's a TIFF with LZW compression. A basic drawing, one A4 page. Size is 1.8MB.

I'm not sure what to look at in the strace output, so I ended up writing this script: #!/bin/bash temp_file="$(mktemp --tmpdir=/tmp)" tiff2ps $1 > $temp_file ps2pdf13 -sPAPERSIZE=a4 $temp_file $2 rm $temp_file
