If you are just looking to orchestrate Docker containers do have a look at Swarm. Another option would be Weave which creates an overlay network to interconnect the containers.

No, this is a question out of curiosity, as I would expect the interface to be in the state UP as oppose to UNKNOWN. It's not that something is working or not. It's that it does not make much sense to me. Would you expect this behavior ?
