comment Why do I have to manually copy /etc/services and /etc/resolv.conf into /var/spool/postfix/etc?
ah! I'd switched from starting postfix via service postfix start (i.e. making use of /etc/init.d/postfix) to just doing postfix start... going back to service postfix start solves it, surely for the reason above

indeed, I've since determined I can't telnet to any servers on port 25 from my laptop, while I can telnet to my new postfix from another server. Thanks for your help!

in /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf I have mail.* -/var/log/mail.log and mail.err /var/log/mail.err: mail.log is empty, mail.err has some old messages from interacting via shell but nothing where I tried to send email above

ok, fantastic! I got a whole load of output from tcpdump inside the container at the moment when I sent a message to the alias from my gmail... so port 25 routing into the container is working. I see nothing in /var/log/mail.log or /var/log/mail.err though

I can telnet example.com 80 ok from my laptop, and I can telnet example.com 25 from the droplet into the container... I believe problem is Postfix refusing to respond for some reason

it seems from comments here that indeed Docker has some magic config and should just work despite only IPv6 listed by netstat github.com/docker/docker/issues/2174#issuecomment-44869229
