comment Will Amazon SES improve spam filtering through typical spam filtering packages
@ErikA: While it is a slight bit of promotion, I am merely giving some other alternatives to SES, in case it isn't what they are looking for. I am sorry if it seems like all I am doing is screaming our name from the top of a mountain!

@SteffenOpel: Understood. I agree completely, that was my mistake. I will be updating my answer to clarify + give slightly more background on positioning. I apologize.

What sort of errors are common? And I wouldn't be allowing any other users to send through the app, just transactional or notification emails. Thanks for your time though!

comment Getting myself removed from the SORBS blacklist
They all should have instructions on getting off of the spam list, though you should clean up your spam-related issues (and it sounds like you have) and they should be very friendly if you explain what was wrong before and the steps you took to clean it up. Worked well for us on CBL!

comment GMail and Yahoo Mail servers not accepting mails from my slicehost slice
I'm not sure if Slicehost uses shared IPs or dedicated IPs, but if it is the former, you do not fully control whether or not people will spam. Suggest you find a service like PostageApp (Mine!) or SendGrid to manage your email for you - they keep IPs clean for people just like yourself!

comment Where should I set up or host my email server?
Seconded. Here is a complete list of the better players in the space: PostageApp (mine!), SendGrid, Amazon SES, PostmarkApp, Critsend, and Mad Mimi. Take your pick and try to figure out which one suits your needs.

comment Is an email whitelist tied to a domain name, or an IP address?
Just did a huge blitz for our mail servers, and practically everyone asks for IPs. That's why when I applied to all of them, I made sure to note where to apply and/or contact information of anyone there. Would make any changes or additions much easier.

comment Send email through local SMTP vs google app engine
Would you really want to manage your own SMTP server? Getting email into inboxes is not a science, there's a lot of gobbledegook that third-party SMTP providers handle so you don't have to.
