comment What does pidgin mean by “Host unknown”?
The name on the SSL certificate used on the server (which is Mac OS X Server 10.6) didn't match the domain setting. Changing that fixed the problem. If you can update your answer to specify that the domains hosted by the server and the name of the SSL certificate have to match the account's domain, I'll mark you as the answer.

I have Wireshark, and I don't know why I didn't think to check it before. Running it while launching Pidgin shows it querying DNS for the account's domain, getting the proper response, and communicating with the server. After a little bit of handshaking, the server replies with the error. I see "service requested for unknown domain" in the text.

It's the same issue throughout the office with Pidgin. I tried iChat from a Mac and it said the password was wrong, but the logs on the XMPP server don't show any connection attempts. And I know the password was right.

I already did. I can ping the name of the domain specified in the account settings, as well as the name of the server it refers to, without a problem.

comment Who is carrierzone and what do they have to do with email through a custom domain?
Thanks. I have no problem with finding a new registrar / DNS host; I'm looking to confirm that changing registrars and copying MX records over to different DNS servers won't break email to the custom domain.

comment How to change default application in a website in IIS 7.5 on Windows 7
I've got Handler Mappings and ISAPI Filters to either side of HTTP Response Headers. Must be a setting somewhere. It could also be the fact that I'm actually on IIS 7.5, not 7. My mistake. I'll update the question appropriately.

I see HTTP Response Headers, but no HTTP Redirect. I've managed to solve it a bit differently, though; turns out you can modify the physical path of the default web site.

Can you clarify your first option? I don't see an option for HTTP Redirect anywhere under Default Web Site.

Your second option seems to be what is suggested here, and I tried it but it doesn't work for non-HTML resource requests (scripts, images, etc)

You are correct in your assumption. So how can I mass-forward emails that are stored in the message database?

Ah. I believe it's called an Xserve, to be exact.

comment DNS and DHCP not agreeing on an IP address
I don't think we have either of those really set up, but I'll look into it; it would probably be beneficial. I deleted both DNS records for my workstation (forward and reverse), then released and renewed my IP. DNS and DHCP now match, and everything appears to be working.

comment SSL: “point to point security” vs “end to end security”?
What I'm worried about is unauthorized clients being able to access and use my service, so I need SSL to protect the API key I use. Is it a good measure for that purpose? If/when I start sending more user-specific data, I'll probably implement OAuth.

comment How do I erase a tape with NTBackup on Windows Server 2003?
Also, I managed to get a tape into the Free media pool, and ran the backup job with the /um switch, but Backup comes up and spends a couple seconds trying to mount the media and then goes away. The log file says "The requested media failed to mount. The operation was aborted."
