They are hardware encrypted when they are written to my tape. I forget the level of encryption, but I know it's over a 1024 bit key.

I found it in /lib/ufw/user.rules and /lib/ufw/user6.rules. I copy that between server, deactivate and reactive ufw and the rules applied.

I didnt say it was a reliable option. Also a couple of changes in your ssh client config can deal with that as well.

Actually one of the best ways I have found to limit brute force attacks is to use fail2ban. That also works for a number of other services as well.
