comment How can I stop nginx from retrying PUT or POST requests on upstream server timeout?
it seems to be the if (...) { } around proxy_next_upstream that nginx doesn't like

Actually it didn't work: Nginx says "proxy_next_upstream not allowed here". I tried moving the if blocks into location and got the same error. Using "proxy_next_upstream error" in either location on its own works.

comment Unexpected behaviour with passthru in php
Is it perhaps running your stuff in a chrooted enviroment or something? That might explain why "whoami" works but not "cat /proc/meminfo".

Yep this would do the job. Anyone know an implementation that I could train?

Hmm its starting to look like I will have to write a bash script with lots of greps. I was hoping to have something figure out the patterns automatically.

Unfortunately we would likely need the non-free version and its a bit expensive

I have see the error from both Windows (IE7) and Mac OS X (Chrome and Firefox) so I don't think it is client related. It may be a proxy issue however.
