This would be perfect except that I'm trying to log into a VM on an OS X host, and the ssh command on OS X does not understand the --noprofile or --norc options. Any idea how else to accomplish the same thing as providing those options?

Also correct, I believe, but of course, I can only accept one answer.

Doh! I thought the group ownership was enough, but didn't notice that the group rw permissions were not present on mysql, performance_schema and test directories (since sudo ls -l /opt/local/var/db/mysql56/ was an afterthought). I suppose this whole problem would not have occurred if i had run sudo -u _mysql mysql_install_db instead of sudo mysql_install_db. Correct?

Perhaps, I should actually use a CNAME from www. instead of from the root, then (maybe that's what the Sites docs actually say -- I'll check), and host the Web site under www. ? In that case, I guess I could still point the root at GoDaddy with an A record, and use .htaccess on GoDaddy redirect root-domain URLs to www. URLs. Does that sound right?

Thanks for the advice. I guess that means the instructions for Force.com Sites hosting are in contradiction to the RFCs though, because that's where I was told to use CNAME. I assume that's because Sites is cloud-hosted, and there is no permanent, predictable IP address for the site server?
