comment Exim4 setup not working with piping
Regarding your edit - the process sending the email is just echo "This is a test." | mail -s Testing someone@sub1.domain.net, logged in as root. I'm not too sure how I'd change it to a valid domain name, since I'm sending it locally, for testing. Would you be able to point me to the right part of the config, which would convert ETC_MAILNAME?

Thanks for the suggestion Todd - I just added an update with the log message, after I send that email.

Thanks for the suggestions Todd. I made sure 1,2 and 3 were fine. I added an update to my question, after digging in the mainlog for exim. Maybe that will shed some light - I'm still not sure how to fix it, though.

Thanks Tom - I'll keep investigating this. It was never an issue until I migrated everything to this new server, so I'm almost positive that it's related to the attacks.

Thanks @Wil - that does actually make sense. Spamd has been using a lot of memory, and the web apps (php scripts) were the first ones that I was thinking about. I'll keep my logs running and if it happens again, hopefully I can track down what's doing it.

Yeah, mine didn't freeze, it just took an extremely long time to do anything. And this is just a server, so it doesn't have a desktop - I only access it via SSH. And this is a dedicated server, not VM.

I managed to find the output of the free -m that I did yesterday, and updated the question with it.

I was also logged in via SSH during one of these outages (yesterday), and the server got dreadfully slow. I managed to run free -m and it told me that there was 0 memory and swap available, so something was really eating it up. I couldn't run any other commands, as the system completely froze up - all I could do was PING it.

I also setup a memory logger to spit out details every 10 minutes into a file; so if it does occur again, I'm hoping that this will have some valid information.
