comment MS SQL Server Query Timeouts
@syneticon-dj I did that but it's a lot to paste into my question. Should I look for something specific in that? Also, the result set shouldn't be all that big (maybe a couple hundred hits at most).

Why is this expected behavior? Why would 1 query (even a terribly designed query) bring the network traffic down to almost 0? Why would 1 query stop SQL Server from responding to other queries? Why would SQL Server allow itself to be used like this?

What's so bad about it? Assuming WITH(NOLOCK) is added, what's actually wrong with the query? Not specifying the column names?

I'm not 100% sure if any other are. I'll check. Yeah, this table has 12mil rows, so it's pretty big.

comment Resource Monitor Disk Usage scale
That was my point. If the graph scale goes from 1 to 10, is that bad? I mean, does it scale up to 100 and 1000, and THEN I should be worried? It's no longer an issue anymore.

comment ASP.Net Restart IIS
That was our first thought, but no, it just slows performance until it eventually times out all requests. The next thing we tried was to monitor the memory usage of w3wp.exe (or whatever it is called), but that didn't give us any sort of usable information either.

comment ASP.Net Restart IIS
the app is 3rd party and we are 8 versions back of their current code base. We are upgrading in March, but this issue crops up 1-2 times a day, and is a huge pain for our users if I'm not immediately where I can restart IIS. I will try the app pools next time (there are 4) and see if that makes it recover. I wish I could cause this to happen so I could test it.
