Hmm, 302M does seem a lot. 1000 visits/day isn't a substantial load - that's less than one a minute. Maybe do a web search around 'apache small memory footprint' etc? Also, as you say, try a different MPM. Has it spawned a number of PHP tasks via FastCGI/fcgid?
