I'm a recovering Windows programmer (15 years of C++, C#, SQL Server), but with the help of node.js and Erlang, I'm getting over it.

comment Automatically responding to “openssl req” prompts?
Perfect! I'm trying to generate a one-off CA / server certificate chain for unit testing, and it needed to be scripted.

comment DHCP Post-Install configuration wizard hangs
In my question, it says "demo environment". By that I meant to imply that every machine in the demo will be virtualized, and will be on the internal switch. This, further, implies that I might be running it on a box connected to a production network. Allowing a demo DHCP server free reign on a production network is a big no-no.

comment DHCP Post-Install configuration wizard hangs
@joeqwerty irrelevant; this is all on the same box, and I don't want it having access to the external network. Exposing a DHCP server that way is bad.

I don't remember seeing the register option (I was panicking a bit), and Jake was the first to respond with the advice to use the oldest AVHD, so he gets the rep.

Yeah, it does sound like a firewall issue, but I don't think so. Updated the question.

comment Tuning windows virtual memory/paging for a specific workload
CreateFile needs the FILE_FLAG_NO_BUFFERING flag, but that imposes requirements on how the file is read. It may not work for you.

If it's not your binary, you might be able to do something by playing with job objects. I can't, given a couple of seconds searching, find anything obvious though.

comment Using Powershell, how do I eject an ISO image from a Hyper-V virtual machine?
I want to unmount an ISO file. What part of that is not clear? The documentation shows how to mount one, which I can already do.

A little more? I'm aware of Set-VMDisk. What's the magic incantation to get it to eject the ISO?

comment Relative performance of VMWare Player, Workstation, Server and ESX?
Definitely that much more performant? Will it solve my problem? Or will I waste time getting it installed and then find myself in the same situation?

I have, but that assumes that they'll be approved. Also, VMs are attractive in that you can just clone a dev image and spin up another one.

comment Using .local for internal websites
We have (e.g.) server.ourcompany.com and otherserver.ourcompany.local; not much chance of a collision unless company B is also called "ourcompany". We should probably use (e.g.) otherserver.corp.ourcompany.com, but the decision was made a while back.

comment Virtual Hosts not accessible from another computer on the same network
To add to that: I have a router that forwards port 80 to my public web server; I publish the external IP address of the router in my external DNS. My router can't handle internal traffic attempting to access the external address (it doesn't port forward correctly). So I had to set up internal DNS to mirror (but lie about) the external DNS.

comment Backing up Linux server to Windows server?
Windows Server Backup on Hyper-V doesn't (stupidly) provide for single-file backup. So it'll be difficult to just backup the VHD for the Ubuntu guest.

comment Why isn't Windows 2008 Service Pack 2 appearing in Windows Update?
Looked like it was Live Messenger; I just downloaded and installed the SP directly. That worked fine (on the second attempt).

comment Safely deploying/hosting a virtualized domain containing a DHCP server
We do something similar: the (Microsoft) DHCP server has a configured scope; there's an exclusion that covers the entire scope; then we have reservations so that specific MAC addresses get specific IP addresses.

The Atom N270 (in my Samsung NC10) definitely doesn't support VT -- based on attempting to use XP Mode in Windows 7.

But bear in mind that the POP3 component has been dropped from Windows 2008, which might be important if you plan on using it and then upgrading in future...
