I'm a professional 'full-stack' developer, especially interested in web applications, Java development and Linux based operating systems.

I contribute towards a small number of Open Source projects, balancing out my karma. :D

Unless you're having issues with slow heap memory allocation, it's often better to let the JVM decide its own Xms value.

If he sets the Xmx anywhere near 1.5 GiB (especially with Apache HTTPD running) he's likely to run the process into swap and get issues with slow GC.

What are the specs of your system and what percentage of resources would you like to be available to Tomcat (is the server solely running Tomcat or multiple services)?

@MarkM My point was that the M$ doc says you can specify a host name, but womble's answer says you can't.

I'm trying to test an app (not mine) in an environment with a proxy - the app doesn't support them. All the other remote calls work with this approach because their IP addresses remain static. If there's a better approach to doing a 'quick test', I'd be grateful of any suggestion. :)

After lookup, the remote server's IP address often changes - so a single static route isn't suitable.
