comment Unable to remove limit on memory usage for PHP script
sorry about that. What I am saying is that Piwik script is not a good way to test if your memory limit is working. Can you try to do this using a script in php, top of the script first line use ini_set('memory_limit', 'xxxxM'); and see if that works.

hey Jess, Thanks for getting back. As I had guessed correctly this is a filed bug dev.piwik.org/trac/ticket/766 and therefore no amount of PHP tweaking gonna help. So leave your php to optimal settings and lets see if there is a patch more: forum.piwik.org/read.php?2,77831

comment What is the difference between a cloud server a virtual server and a dedicated server?
I give you points for good explanation. However I disagree that constant high load will not benefit from cloud. The true cloud will allow additional resources to be provisioned immediately and and maybe automatically to serve the extra loads. That is not possible on dedicated servers or VPS where we can hit a hard limit. Also VPS cannot scale easily to multiple VPS and requires a lot of manual intervention, self setup etc which is not so on the cloud. In case of VPS or dedicated server you own the failure if not the hardware. On the cloud you can just move along without opening a ticket :)

comment How are Amazon EBS snapshot's sizes calculated?
i checked just now in my account. Your EBS usage and backup usage will be displayed in the AWS console (if you use it). It always reads to be the full size as of the disk space for the first snapshot.

comment CPU cores and workers / maxservers
not really, if you do a "top" and then press "1" during operation you can see that nginx does not really need a lot of CPU. It can run well even on single CPU. However there are other processes like php/mysql or system processes that could use the free cpu. nginx uses by far the least amount of CPU even under heavy load (for static files). Always leave extra room to grow on a dedicated box.

yes what you said I have already done. As I mentioned in my own answer I got the FPM working by manually editing the conf files. However the Init script does not work properly. Would you happen to have the parameters you used to compile? I could try it out on an instance and work from there. am using on CentOS-like os and I can modify the params to suit my setup, thanks

Agreed on posting here. I see that Configuration File (php.ini) Path => /usr/local/lib Loaded Configuration File => /usr/local/lib/php.ini I assume this is where you are eidting? So dont use -1 memory limit put a finite value. Also in the post_max_size increase to say 20MB restart webserver(important). Test script if there is error please post the new error exactly and also the new php -i output. let's see what happens. ahh yes, send the script name of piwik thats causing the problem. When you get the full error message it should usually give you the line number as well

yes just web server. so what did you get? Also if it hasnt worked out it would be helpful to look at the phpinfo. I suspect its not picking up the ini from the place where you are modifying it? p.s. we are way off timezones. PM me your skype id if you can and maybe we can just chat to figure this out, then post the solution here

you dont need to which is why I mentioned it. the application can call the relevant AWS services which will be quite minimal requiring only the user to have their account information at hand and key it into the interface (not amazon but own application). I know I would use this approach or I wouldn't recommend it.

i got problems with the workers as well. I had to edit the php-fpm.conf files as apparently default values dont work correctly (as of 5.3.6) so while it works now the init script does not work, it claims to not find the pid file... then attempts to start and shows fail. Even though php-fpm process is started. interesting thing you mentioned regarding workers. would you care to share an example of these options specified during compile? noe more problem: despite having specified--disable-pdo --disable-phar etc it continues to compile and add it. same thing for --without-sqlite, has no effect
