comment How do I use MacPorts (rsync) through a SOCKS5 proxy?
You can set rsync_server and rsync_options in /opt/local/etc/macports/macports.conf. As an alternative method, use HTTP with the daily tarball or the Subversion repository.

Sorry, but Homebrew is far away from being a replacement. It might be able to automate software compilation, but it does not have any sort of dependency management and lacks other features MacPorts has. Also, as it does rely on software provided with Mac OS X it will definitely break at the next system release and I doubt it will target multiple versions of Mac OS X as MacPorts always did. Homebrew might give you a working system for now, but over the long run you will run into problems.

I recommend using port upgrade outdated 2>&1 | tee updates.txt which prints to both the terminal and to the file. This allows to see progress.
