Why are you trying it on your Windows box? You've clearly stated you want a Linux tool.

comment How do you do the offsite hard drive backups?
My opinion is that you should run rsync from the remote (backup) machine rather than to it. That way, the production machine doesn't have the backup's credentials on it -- so when someone roots the production machine they can't immediately nuke all your backups too.

comment FreeBSD jails vs virtualization performance
You can enable raw sockets in jails by setting the security.jail.allow_raw_sockets sysctl to 1.

As for the dynamic IP -- you just need a dynamic DNS. Effectively, a dynamic DNS entry is one which updates whenever your IP changes. Look up DynDNS or NoIP: they're two free services which provide exactly this.

comment Web hosting 101?
Because of it's "extend-anything" nature, I was under the impression that you can't really run mod_python in a shared environment. If this is the case, you'd be hard-pressed to find a shared-hosting provider willing to let you run your own Apache instance.

comment Change default crontab editor to nano in FreeBSD
As a note, csh uses ~/.cshrc for the profile script, so you'd need to put the setenv command in there.

It's not the same for FreeBSD.

comment Poll: What is your favourite terminal program?
As a note, xterm has UTF-8 support (may need recompilation), and supports configurable colors (anything in #RRGGBB format) out of the box :)

comment .htaccess not working (mod_rewrite)
Right, but your configuration includes .conf and *.load from mods-enabled, *not mods-available. You can run httpd -t -D DUMP_MODULES to list all modules being loaded.

@Nathan, so something like find /Backup/ -name '*.bak' -print0 | xargs -0 -n 1 rsync -e ssh ?

I think I'd introduce a couple minutes of planned downtime -- otherwise you have a small race condition between syncing the two databases and switching the connection information in the application. You'd lose any (potentially critical) changes which were made between then-and-there.
