comment Multi-user screen sharing in Lion
I'm honestly not sure if it's been standardized, but I know third party software is doing it. Mocha VNC, Screens, Remoter, and VNC Viewer (all for iPad) all support VNC connections to Lion specifying the username before connecting. At this point I should add that I'm not yet aware of a free VNC client for Windows that supports usernames.

Your example use-cases are very helpful, thanks. Your mention of caching done by Samba/Linux also makes me realize that with the amount of data I'm talking about, the best solution is probably to add RAM to the system and let the OS handle caching the most used files.

I guess maybe my question is a bit vague, asking for "noticeably faster"... I was hoping someone who had made the switch could give anecdotal evidence about their experience. It would seem logical that speeding up any link in the chain going from storage to presentation would result in an overall speed increase, but your point about finding the primary bottleneck is well taken. I'd still be eager to hear from someone who has tried this so I can avoid spending the time & money to see for myself.
