I'm a professional sysadmin in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. I've been doing sysadmin work since 1996, I've worked for a smattering of companies including Red Hat, two academic institutions, a regional bank, and now a rail transportation and logistics company.

comment Better way to do [linux] system & environment validation?
I tend to assume people working in professional IT capacities already have the ability to script, or at least have the ability to Google for the references they need...

Are the uid's for the user you're doing things as on the client and the user that owns the files on the server the same?

comment Need a technique to coerce sysadmins to log the reason for accessing a prod server
You're trying to find a technical solution to a workflow / procedural issue. IMHO, such an effort is doomed to failure, and the actual workflow / procedural issue should be addressed directly via non-technical means.

comment routing internet traffic through another subnet on centos
No, there is only one "default gateway" per machine. Adding a GW to the eth1 config will break things. Your assumption of "catch-all" is correct.

That's how I understand it to work, as well. Honestly, though, I think @Grant has the better answer - use a mass mailing service that has experience with this type of thing. Whether that's feasible or not based on your comment to his answer, I can't say, but it's the choice I would try to go with.

comment red hat - glibc version too low for a lot of needed packages
There is a very real risk of system corruption if you do NOT remove the EPEL 7 release package. There are no risks to isntalling EPEL 6 that you haven't already decided are worth taking.

EPEL is specific to the RHEL version you're running. You're running RHEL 6, so you need the EPEL 6 repository. It is not a downgrade, it is correcting an error. The error was installing the EPEL 7 epel-release package.

comment Internet drops out randomly for short periods of time (LAN issue)
The first thing I would try is turning off the DHCP bits of the Sonicwall. You generally don't want to have two DHCP servers on the same LAN, as this can lead to problems.
