comment How do a I edit .conf file for a postgres AWS RDS?
Parameter groups do not give you access to pg_hba.conf settings, only to postgresql.conf settings. Keep an eye on when AWS add Option Groups for PostgreSQL.

comment puppet hostname problem
Perhaps there is a better way, but for me, I regenerated the CA certificates by rm -rf /var/lib/puppet/ssl and then restarting the puppetmaster

comment Setup Tomcat with Puppet (noob question)
Thanks Christian. I agree this is procedural, I even marked the comments with the order. It seems like Puppet can handle it, though.

comment Apache load balancer limits with Tomcat over AJP
Switching to the worker thread is definitely an option, but I would like to figure out what the underlying cause of the 503s is.

Yes the majority of the time the Tomcat servers are fine and do what they are suppose to. I am wondering if there is some Apache or Debian config limit that it being hit.

No database is used. Network traffic goes up and down, but max is 1Mb/sec in, 100k/sec out. We see no network errors. Apache status is on, with an avg of 37 thread waiting, 3 sending reply, 25 closing connection. I can run JMeter and pump another 300 req/s through the system without issue, but the strange part is Apache server status doesn't show the extra JMeter traffic, so I wonder if the server-status is correct. It seems like it can handle more traffic, but randomly returns 503s when all worker threads are busy.

Yes it is a final bounce. Only a manual process of converting bounced message or extracting the original message from the bounce will work.

comment Tools for load-testing HTTP servers?
Keep in mind that ab's -n is the number of responses received before it stops sending requests. When you increase the concurrency, threads are still sending requests before the responses are counted. The above would actually send about 10005 requests. JMeter does not suffer from this problem.

Ok. Tried the flush and adding the route (on eth1 not eth0) and still not contactable. Even tried doing this on both machines without luck.

ip route flush table all is not an option for a machine I only have SSH access to. But I will try ip route flush dev eth1

Post edited above - incomplete route is shown

These machines are in Rackspace Cloud, so the networking topology is unknown. tcpdump reveals that mach01 does not receive any packs when arpinging from mach03. This leads me to believe the routing it screwed up.

Both. mach01 is updating it's arp cache with mach02's details from incoming broadcasts, but mach03/04 do not seem to be receiving the same broadcasts and ARP results in incomplete.
