Update after almost 4 years now. We rolled out the VMware FT and Datacore setup to production in 2011 and are running flawless since then. I did test the various failover states back then (hours of pulling chords, powering off servers/switches, documenting the behaviour) and have to say it works well. No "big red button" required :-P

Can you explain what you mean with routed connections? Layer 3 routing would be not an option.

The switches are yet to be bought. C1 & C3 are onsite, C2 & C4 are remote. There are two carriers providing fibre, one shall be backup.
