comment IIS7: can't set host name on site with SSL cert and port 443
Thank you for this tip! In case anybody else can't rename a cert from IIS (can anybody?) you can rename the cert in the MMC snap-in for Certificates. Just load MMC, add Certificates snap-in, select Computer Account, Local Computer. Once you've loaded the Certificates snap-in you can browse to Certiifcates (Local Computer) > Personal > Certificates and right click to select Properties on your cert. Change the Friendly name field to *.yoursite.com and reload the IIS manager snap-in

comment How do I convert a VMWare VMDK HDD file to a HyperV VHD file?
Microsoft launched a new Solution Accelerator "Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter" which includes a plugin for vCenter! technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh967435.aspx

comment Two separate hosted e-mail services for one domain, can't send mail between them
I'm sure the MX record is pointing to Google Apps because otherwise his client would be freaking out about not getting e-mail. He's using the webhost SMTP to send mail with a script, which doesn't require incoming MX to work.

comment Event ID 16: Windows Update Client ignoring proxy settings
Well, Event ID 16 only happens when the settings are bad, authentication fails, or the network connection is broken. I suggest you engage Microsoft if you think you found a bug.

comment Backup up all VMs in VMWare ESX 3.5 for off-site storage
Ultimately we were dissatisfied with VCB - it's basically a script that hijacks vmdks after making a snap to run from. We decided to go with Veeam.

I wish we could use Spiceworks, it's very easy to use for YOU. The reporting isn't very robust, but I love the reply e-mail commands: #add 30min #assign me #close

Well that isn't in the GUI, and a double click for a window with an X is pretty much the same thing.

That's decidedly worse than "Close the barn door" that ours throws. Bummer!

comment Best way to find the computer a user last logged on from?
Implemented this for now, probably will move to a vbs with more features in the future :) So far, using a VERY simple batch logon script: echo %date%,%time%,%username%,logon,%computername% >> \\server\logon$\logons.csv Open with Excel, and you're set!

comment Is there any free monitoring applications for Windows servers?
Spiceworks doesn't make you add devices manually after the initial scan. So much time saved! Other products seem to handle picking up a few new boxes here and there very poorly in my experience.

Perfect! I wish I could schedule a scan instead of an inventory, but this will do just as well. Thanks!

comment Application usage report on XenApp 6
This let me run powershell commands on Citrix, so +1 for that! However, I was not able to get usage statistics from the command... only statistics about the program being published: path, application name, host servers, etc...

comment How to find competent IT support for remote office?
I worked for an IT firm supporting an office that grew from 15 to 75. I started out there "2 hours per day" and always had imaging to do as they grew. When they hit 40+ I was getting cleared for additional hours on a regular basis, all the way until I was working a full 40 hour shift per week out there. You might want to consider that, and then when the bill from the firm equals what you'd need to hire a part time help desk you can convince management it'd be a prudent choice to switch gears.

I would go with one of the larger IT firms. If you don't like the guy you're working with, ask for a new one. I don't know many names, but I've known people who work for Robert Half Technology. You could google them and their competitors.
