comment multicast tcpdump and subscriptions
.. so I set up the switch so it forwards all the multicast traffic.. now it arrives at my linux box, where the kernel will drop all those packets because apps haven't subscribed for the specific multicast addresses.. or have I misunderstood something?

Also, as I said, if possible, I want to get all available multicast traffic. There are a lot of traffic and I don't know all the addresses.

"You can generate an IGMP packet with a variety of tools.". What are these tools? I obviously don't want to manually assemble a packet.. iperf looks nice. What else can you use?

Thx! As I said I don't have another public IP for the virtual adapter so that solution won't work. If there were another IP I won't need the port forwarding..

note: I don't have another network card and unfortunately I cannot get another public IP for the VM.

by "works" I mean it works.... have you ever tried it? for example vmware player emulates an old network card which has no multicast support at all.

comment How should I burn in hard drives?
"Once you move the thing, you're back to where you started." - not true. this is how an MTTF graph for a disk looks like: cs.cmu.edu/~bianca/fast/img13.png cs.ucla.edu/classes/spring09/cs111/scribe/16/… testing in the early period can filter out a lot of problematic drives, manufacturers actually do these stress tests to make more reliable product but of course it's not economical to do the test till the graph flattens out.

comment shell record UDP stream from a specific address
firewall rule is an interesting idea, thx. I'll stick to the C program, as it's sounds more logic.

comment Are there high availability cluster solutions for real-time TCP streaming?
This sounds immensely complex.. is it OK if the servers are not completely in-sync? How would the hot backup server know that at exactly which byte to continue sending the stream (for each client)?
