comment Hadoop HDFS: set file block size from commandline?
Yep, passing options on the commandline in 0.21 is broken, due to some deprecation issues. However, your solution would work for other versions (trunk, 0.20.x), so I'll accept. Thanks!

comment qemu-img: preallocate portion of qcow2 copy-on-write image?
@womble: As far as I can tell, I can mount a qcow2 image inside of a VM, create a 20gb trash file, delete it, and the image will remain 20gb. I guess I don't understand the difference in that and what I'm trying to do here - won't the filesystem try to place new files on those wiped sectors before allocating new ones, first filling that spare 20gb before growing the qcow image?

comment Hadoop HDFS: set file block size from commandline?
I just tried this and can't get it to work, either with -put or -copyFromLocal. In both cases, I get (avg. block size 67022309 B), with the default block size as 64mb. This is with Hadoop 0.21 from Apache (not CDH). Any other ideas?

Got it, I missed that part of the releasenotes. Unfortunately I don't have access to the graphical install, but I'll do as @MikeyB suggests. Thanks!

comment KVM VM CPU prioritization on CentOS 5.5
I was wrong - its CentOS 5.5 on Rocks 5.3. The reason I'm stuck with the 5 branch is unfortunately it's not my cluster. We need the 2 VMs to explicitly share the same CPUs, so pinning won't work. I'll use nice unless I can find a backport of cgroups.
