comment Slow Fsync w/ Google Cloud's Local SSD (Postgresql)
Thanks for the response, Craig. That does certainly make sense. I probably see high IO and throughput with fio tests because of the write cache (which apparently cannot be disabled). RDBMS is not really the suggested use-case for these block devices, but it's interesting. I suppose the next question I should ask Google if this is, in fact, a singular disk or a slice of a local bbu-backed RAID that I might be able to disable write barriers on the mounted volume. In one simple test, this made for some great fsync improvement (at the cost of data resilience)

comment Cassandra on Linode: Dark magic isn't working
Update here in case anybody from after 2011 shows up: this is not the case anymore. Linode runs on SSD as of mid-2014 and Amazon's EBS is not recommended by Datastax because EBS has to contend with network and is unpredictable (read more here: docs.datastax.com/en/cassandra/2.1/cassandra/planning/…). Ephemeral SSD is the recommended approach now on AWS.

comment cassandra nodetool repair - how to schedule properly?
In the last line of your answer, should that say "RF=2 is a recipe for disaster..." as indicated by OP's RF? I've personally been burned by by setting RF=2 and QUORUM CL.

This helped me out. Didn't know nmap would try to use a downed NIC.

comment DFS File Storage and XenServer VMs on iSCSI Target with Two, Cross-Country locations
Thanks for the great answer! I will remember this for my AD. I believe DFSR in server 2008 supports asynchronous I/Os; thanks for alerting me to the potential issue there. The snaps may be a bigger issue, but I'm really only relying on them for true disaster.

comment Deny Static IP Assignments
Thanks for the answer, Tom. I figured I was just missing something in my understanding here. I'm looking to get new hardware soon, but I'll see if my current switch supports this.
