comment Control scheduled tasks execution
Definitely the first look seems like I needed, I am still checking the documentation to find out how to use it. I'll be back to you soon.

comment Control scheduled tasks execution
Thought about it, but a) worried about depending on yet another scheduled task to check scheduled tasks and b) generating each script locally would be easy, but controlling them centrally would not be. Also, I would have no backup for mantaining the system while I am at holiday or gone.

comment Migrating to Linux to get more memory for Java?
@EricDANNIELOU Now seriously, it is not a critical system so I have no way to get more money for it. But even if I had, I would still try to find how much I can get out of the HW that I already have and that is barely used before going shopping.

comment Migrating to Linux to get more memory for Java?
@EricDANNIELOU I had $20.000.000 for new HW but spent all of it in hookers and blackjack (in fact, forget the blackjack). Now I am trying to made it up with some legacy HW and serverfault answers. But don't tell it to my boss...

comment Migrating to Linux to get more memory for Java?
Also, chosing distro + downloading + burning + installing + configuring + installing JVM & JBoss is not 20 minutes. And I don't want it to work once just out of luck and find in production that it is not guaranteed...

comment Migrating to Linux to get more memory for Java?
It is not an issue with the OS footprint but rather with its memory management, with windows I have almost 3GB free RAM but without enough contiguous addresses.

comment How to handle OpenVPN client as a service, when the laptop is physically on the network already?
IIRC, OpenVPN client tries to connect three times and then stops... I did not try it as a service, but you should check it out.

comment Virtualize MS-DOS desktop & copying the HDD verbatim
Of course the user that this is a "best effort" attempt. This way, if I don't succeed and the PC finally dies, then I'll be able to just confirm that it is impossible to repair, instead of having to try the same with a more tight schedule.

Ok, didn't think about DosBox seriously (too much time with vmwares and the likes) and did not know about dd. I also found about Bochs, which looks interesting too. It will take me some time to try it, so I'll give the solution as correct now and I'll update how it ends later. Thanks.
