comment How to edit system catalogs in PostgreSQL 8.1?
It looks like allow_system_table_mods property was introduced in Postgres 8.2 as developer option.

AFAIK there is no such grant and you really shouldn't touch catalogs in such way. I'll check if that is possible "manually". Why do you need that ?

@Svisstack: pg_database is internal PostgreSQL catalog. You can modify/update some values like datacl, but you can't change its name.

comment PostgreSQL hangs during shut down in linux?
Which distribution of GNU/Linux you have ? @Magnus is right about smart and fast shutdown. You might read more about it in doc (postgresql.org/docs/current/static/server-shutdown.html). It's pretty well explained there.

comment Can't create clusters in PostgreSQL 9.0
I think that EnterpriseDB's installer is not integrated with pg_* postgresql-common facilitate. For Ubuntu 10.10 you can install PostgreSQL 9.0 (or try install new postgresql-common only) using PPA repository (launchpad.net/~pitti/+archive/postgresql). Check also piware.de/2010/09/postgresql-9-0-final-released
