Please note that this is a huge security risk. There's a reason these files are not readable for a user, they contain passwords.

For this comment to be useful, the URLs should be the manual "report" forms. (But most of them do not have such thing).

Thanks for the example. I did not realize that the UUID is stored in a textual representation, and I thought your script was missing the conversion part.

I'd like to replicate the --uuid behavior of cryptsetup. This would be part of a backup-restore procedure (as I already mentioned in my first comment).

Thanks for the answer. Only one thing is unclear for me how can you pass the desired new UUID for the script (also what does uuid.uuid1 do)?

comment Change LUKS UUID (without cryptsetup > 1.2)
As part of a backup-restore procedure I would like to re-create a partition which will be in sync with the existing system. (For example crypttab uses the UUID). - I do not want to change crypttab itself as there is no guarantee that it is only used in there.

comment Full server backup solution (to remote windows share)
@HopelessN00b AFAIK MS-DOS partition table is the standard (default) for most distros - I did not want to shoot myself in the foot by choosing something bleeding edge which is not even supported by all Gnu tools. I will try to create a script in the following days and post it here for review.

@HopelessN00b My biggest problem with images is that I'm not sure that a disk image restored to a different hard drive would result in a workable system. Can you please offer some literature concerning this topic?
