When I'm not bicycling, I'm a Linux SysAdmin. I'm on the board of my local bicycle advocacy group.

Bikes are my primary transportation. A 2009 Surly Long Haul Trucker, set up as a commuter and a 2012 Trek Ion CX. I also take the bus, but do not own a car.

comment How do I run a process remotely from inside a shell script?
OGGENC="ssh WWW.XXX.YYY.ZZZ /usr/bin/oggenc" should work; it definitely won't with the backticks (`). Show us in the script where $OGGENC is used.

I'm not suggesting that you reboot the NFS server, I'm asking if you had. Rebooting an NFS server (or restarting the NFS daemon) can cause these kinds of errors in some cases.

"shouldn't" != "isn't". Once you've ruled out the likely things, check for the unlikely, then once you rule those out, rule out the impossible.

Some unix variants need the "-a" option passed to ifconfig to get informative output.

I'd think that keeping a password in an expect script would violate some kind of policy...

You'd have to add SPF records to the client's DNS, which seems unlikely.
