You tried ChrootDirectory "/var/www/ftp.user" (putting quotes around the argument)? Then the dot isn't the problem. "All components of the pathname must be root-owned directories that are not writable by any other user or group." means that the ftp.user directory can't be writable the user 'ftpuser' or any other user that isn't root.
