When I'm not bicycling, I'm a Linux SysAdmin. I'm on the board of my local bicycle advocacy group.

Bikes are my primary transportation. A 2009 Surly Long Haul Trucker, set up as a commuter and a 2012 Trek Ion CX. I also take the bus, but do not own a car.

comment Send email on behalf of clients
You'd have to add SPF records to the client's DNS, which seems unlikely.

comment BIND/Named: disabled recursion, client to use alternative servers
What OS are the clients? You could use puppet (or something like it) to edit the hosts file for you automatically.

comment How can I uninstall software from an RHEL 5 system?
@jtimberman: well, okay... I don't install directly via CPAN or EGG on any RHEL/CentOS system I care about either: I make an RPM out of it and install that.

comment Timeout ssh sessions after inactivity?
With autodetach off, they'd basically never notice. If you included something like 'defescape "^ "' (or at least to a more obscure control sequence than ^A) it'd be impossible or unlikely for them to actually treat screen like screen; they'd just see "screen" if they echo'd the TERM var, and even that you could change to vt100.

comment Timeout ssh sessions after inactivity?
This simply doesn't do what's wanted at all. The ClientAliveInterval causes the sshd server to (essentially) send a ping through the ssh channel to see if the client is still there. It's not useful for idling out the user.

comment Do you use physical locks on your mobile (or even desktop) PCs?
FYI: basing my guesses about nail clippers and laptop cable locks on how bike thieves get by bicycle cable locks, which are basically the same, but thicker

comment Is there any linux shellmenu available?
better if it's .bash_profile, which gets run at login. .bashrc happens for every shell and anything interactive can cause problems

with "pinfo -m" you can the "links". Man doesn't really have links, though.

comment How can you browse the links in Man?
"pinfo -m" gives you man's manuals. Without the -m option, you'll get a different (info) version of the docs unless there is none (in which case it will return the man page), which may be more or less complete. Many GNU packages update the info pages and don't touch the man pages, other packages update man and have an outdated info page.

comment What is the best way to sync iCal calendars between multiple Macs on the same network?
Agreed. I sync iCal on two Macs, plus an iPhone; works great and any old web browser will work in a pinch.

somebody used a Debian package once, at least. They may have compiled from source and overwrote the actual files, or broke it some other way...

comment Are a RJ11 jack and a RJ45 socket physically compatible?
I believe the 1&2, 3&6, 4&5, 7&8 set up ethernet was specifically designed so that the same cabling could be used for phone and ethernet.

comment LVM and disaster recovery
You sure about that first one? I thought LVM usually defaulted to striping, so that the 150 meg file would be likely to have about 75 meg on each drive
