comment How to bridge a range of public IPs to KVM virtual machines on Debian/Ubuntu
There was actually no routing error, it was an error in my .ssh/config file. Now it works great, thanks for the help :)

comment How to bridge a range of public IPs to KVM virtual machines on Debian/Ubuntu
Thanks for the help, I managed to make my outgoing traffic work correctly by changing the gateway to be the bridge address and then adding a route on the host machine. Now, I just need to get the incoming traffic routed correctly (see my update above for details).

Okay, from following your advice, I got a step further, but still can't connect from the outside to the guest VM, and it doesn't have internet access. I've updated my question to reflect matters as they currently stand.

The exact words from their support were “Your Subnet is routed via the Main IP of your server so you should use this IP as the GW for you subnet.”, so the routing part is only my interpretation. I tried removing eth0 from bridge_port, but that caused my network not to come back up correctly. I suppose I should re-add eth0 as a separate interface (instead of just being part of the bridge)?

I have enabled forwarding for both ipv4 and ipv6. The server is running headless in a datacenter, so I'm not sure how I'd go about attaching a VNC viewer to it's virtual machines. I have tried virsh console, but that does not give me a shell, just seems to stall.

comment How to assign multiple public IP-Adresses for 2 KVM-Guests
I've been trying to follow this guide, but when I add the bridge to /etc/network/interfaces and reload the network connection, the network does not come back up. In my case, I have one primary public IP for the host server and a separate /28 subnet I want to assign to the guests. I kept the original address for eth0, and then set up the first IP of the /28 on the bridge. Is that the wrong approach? Should it be the same adress as eth0?

Thanks for the insight. I switched to nginx a year ago, so it does not really matter to me either :)

I must have been using Macs for too long, had forgotten there was such a thing – there was a setting for it in the BIOS, thanks.

If you had actually read my question, you'd find that I already have the mentioned line in /boot/loader.conf.

comment How to use rsync for backing up the entire filesystem – include/exclude rules file
--one-file-system is not the default, I was rather that I had the exclusion rules wrong as Gilles suggested. As for the destination not being root, that is true, but it’s not really an issue for my use.

Yeah, I read about this option, but I considered it to be too much of a hassle. I don’t need any more strange services to keep track of :)

Ah, that’s a neat trick, thanks. Where is the best place to set such a variable globally (as to avoid having it in .bashrc, .cshrc, etc. for all admin users)?

Thanks, that works – as for FTP being better at file transfers, I haven’t heard of anything that would make it measurably better than HTTP when doing transfers in the megabyte range…

comment Cannot add to sudoers file in Ubuntu
What version of Ubuntu is this? I haven't heard of any Ubuntu versions that didn't ship with sudo… If you don't have sudo installed, try running apt-get install sudo.

Note that this is similar to serverfault.com/questions/68120/… but has more specifics. Thus the new question.

comment Strange GD error when working on PNG images from PHP on FreeBSD
Thankfully, it has disappeared after I upgraded to FreeBSD 7.2. I think the decisive change was the complete rebuild of all packages. Thanks.

Recursive rebuild did not fix the problem, sadly. I tried earlier by rebuilding all dependencies of php5-gd, but that had no effect either.
