Long-time linux user and Perl software developer. Slackware is still my favorite distribution for personal use, but I after gaining experience with others (Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu, debian) I have recently found debian great for getting things done in production.

It does happen to work great when I start using 'sudo -u' as above - all the configuration and other installation appear fine.

That's a lifesaver. I suspected DNS, but everything was OK. Didn't think about reverse lookup on the local lan segment, but editing /etc/hosts did fix it. mysqld must have had the ip/host cached before the crash and restart (from many months ago).
