I noticed that the machine without problems had the internal IP's gateway hashed out in the network config. I've done the same to the problem machine, and it's been OK for the past few hours. Fingers crossed that was it!

I have managed to fix this. I managed to get /dev/xvda1 mounted by adding the -o ext2 option. No idea that was an ext2 device! Particularly as fstab lists it as ext3... very strange! Once that was done just edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to point to the correct device.

They do, but the console ssh doesn't load until past the grub loading stage.
